$383 Million Facelift for San Francisco Airport Terminal

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- San Francisco International Airport has begun renovation of Terminal 2, which served as SFO's International Terminal until December 2000.

The airport had originally planned to begin renovation and conversion of Terminal 2 to domestic operations in the Fall of 2001, but a downturn in airport traffic following the September 11th terrorists attacks deferred the project indefinitely, said airport Director John L. Martin.

Since 2003, SFO has experienced a 22% growth in passenger traffic, said Martin. As a result of this increase in traffic and the addition of several new air carriers, including Jet Blue, Virgin America and Southwest airlines, the Airport Commission has decided to launch the renovation project.

"We're seeing very strong growth in passenger traffic today," said Martin. "We're 11 percent above 9-11 levels on international passengers."

The new Terminal Two will open in 2010.
