4 Months, Three Weeks and Two Days
|
(no rating, in Romanian with subtitles)
In this unsentimental tale, we follow a young University student (Anamaria Marinca) determined to help her college roommate receive an illegal abortion. The place is Romania in the 1980s, a time of a Totalitarian government, and the sense living under those restrictions is at the forefront of the film. Director/Writer Cristian Mungiu perfectly illuminates the soul-crushing desperation of black market bargaining, fear and blackmail. Through it all is the deep friendship and loyalty of Marinca for her friend. It reminds us of the humanity in even the darkest of circumstances. It's hard to believe this movie was not nominated for Best Foreign Film Oscar. But the same is true for La Vie en Rose from France. Two and a half hats for this beautifully made and realistically bleak film.
