Alameda Approves Elementary Curriculum on Tolerance

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KCBS)  -- The Alameda School Board has adopted a controversial lesson plan aimed at discouraging bullying and teasing based on gay and lesbian stereotypes.

With the state Supreme Court ruling on Proposition 8 as a backdrop, the school board voted 3 – 2 on Tuesday to adopt the curriculum.

The series designed to promote tolerance within the schools present a different lesson on inclusiveness each year from kindergarten through grade 5.

Parents who objected to the lessons complained the children were too young to be exposed to the material. They condemned the lessons as sex education in disguise.

The fifth grade lesson includes the true story of a pair of male penguins who successfully hatch an egg and raise a chick.

Teachers throughout Alameda will begin presenting the curriculum to their classes next year. The school board has yet to decide whether parents will be allowed to exempt their children from the lessons.
