SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Holiday weekends can be a dangerous time for drivers as alcohol-related crashes and arrests tend to increase. However, with the help of anklets, law enforcement agents will be able to monitor convicted drunk drivers this holiday weekend.
The anklets are issued by the courts to people with either multiple alcohol offenses or have been caught driving while under the influence. They are then used to monitor alcohol consumption and act as a watchful by alerting authorities if its detects a blood alcohol level higher than .02.
Chris Sites, Western Regional Director of Alcohol Monitor Systems, says the anklets have proven successful in not only in keeping potential drunk drivers off the road, but claims they have also helped people recover from alcohol addiction.
Areas in northern California that use the system include San Francisco, Contra Costa County, Alameda County, and San Jose. In addition, Several Southern California cities also use the system.
