BERKELEY (KCBS/SF Gate) -- Construction of a new athletic sports facility on the UC Berkeley campus will be delayed for 20 days by a legal appeal filed against the project.
The injunction barring the destruction of an oak grove near Memorial Stadium was to have expired Tuesday following a ruling earlier this week that cleared the way for construction to begin. But beginning Friday, the injunction was extended 20 days following a notice of appeal filed by a neighborhood group and an oak preservation group.
It is possible the injunction could be extended further by the state Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile, the university is preparing to move forward with the project as soon as the injunction is lifted, said UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof.
The first order of business will be to remove four tree-sitting protestors living in the oak grove. The tree-sitting protest began in December of 2006 when UC regents first approved the project.
