SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The National Asian-American Survey released Monday questioned 4,400 Americans of Asian descent and found 41% say they’ll vote for Barack Obama. But only 24% support John McCain.
But experts told KCBS the real story is in the number of Asian-American voters up-for-grabs less than a month before Election Day.
“One of the striking features of Asian-Americans and their relationship to political parties is that 54% identify as either Independent or non-partisan, so a majority of Asian-Americans do not identify as either Democrats or Republicans,” said Taeku Lee, associate professor of political science at U.C. Berkeley.
That’s precisely who both parties need to court within the next few weeks. But Lee said it would be a mistake to view Asian Americans as a solid block.
“McCain gets his greatest support among Vietnamese-Americans. Among Japanese-Americans, and Asian-Indians Obama enjoys the greatest levels of support,” said Lee.
Obama was favored by a slimmer margin among Philipinos, Korean and Chinese-Americans.
