BART Faces Dilemma From Weekend Fires

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- BART will be hard pressed to replace millions of dollars worth of electrical equipment damaged by fires at its South Hayward yard this weekend, officials said.

The agency's critical train control system was badly damaged as workers made some errors while installing new equipment and triggered the fires, said BART spokesman Linton Johnson. The agency currently doesn't have the money to replace the control system, he said.

Delays on the Fremont line carried over into the Monday morning commute, and Johnson said they would continue for another month or so.

BART is hoping the delays won't be enough to turn off new passengers who have hopped aboard since gas prices started to spike. The transit system has seen a 13 percent increase in ridership in San Francisco, and more than 4 percent overall since January.

Since gas prices started hitting the $4 mark, Golden Gate Transit has seen a 4.4 percent increase in bus use, with bridge traffic down more than one percent. AC Transit reports no change in ridership.
