Baby Mama

(PG-13)

It is always sad to see a bright woman play dumb girl.  Maybe that was Tina Fey's deal to get this movie made.  Fey plays a 37-year-old business executive determined to have a baby.  Instead of finding the comedy in truth, we get a phony set up with Fey choosing a trashy surrogate (Amy Poehler) and moving her into her house.  We get some kind of social commentary with working class versus a lavish executive lifestyle, but it feels as phony as the characters themselves.  This is unworthy material for these two gifted comediannes.  The only fun comes with Sigourney Weaver as the head of a surrogate woman's company and Steve Martin as a New Age Boss.  But those brief moments will play fine on DVD.
