Bay Area Receives State Grant to Fight Gang Violence

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- The city of Oakland and several other Bay Area cities will receive state funds to fight gang violence, announced Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums Thursday.

Oakland and Alameda County will receive $800,000 from the California Gang Reduction Intervention and Prevention Initiative, said Dellums. It will help pay for additional resources, he said.

"Poverty, hunger, disease, inadequate education, lack of hope, lack of mental health... many, many issues contribute to the issue of crime and violence. It's a very complex problem and it's going to require a complex approach," said the mayor.

The other cities that will share $2.6 million in state grants are San Francisco, Richmond, Mountain View and Santa Rosa, Dellums said.
