Be Kind Rewind

  (PG-13)

I have to admit it:  Jack Black is one of my favorite actors.  From The School of Rock to being the only interesting character in Margot at the Wedding, somehow even turkey like Nacho Libre does not destroy my enjoyment of this feisty performer with the crazed look in his eyes.  Now the bad news:  not even Jack at his most insane can save this hopeless comedy.  It starts with a good idea:  a video store is going broke, and two guys (Jack Black, Mos Def) decide to remake some Hollywood movies to save the day.  One problem is:  they have zero budget.  So we end of with cheesy and cheap movie remakes of Ghostbusters and other hits.  It's a good idea with no charm or wit, dumbed down to make money from seven to twelve year olds..and it will.  Hard to believe this same director (Michael Gondry) created the quirky and original Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  At least Be Kind Rewind brings up Fats Waller (brilliant composer and pianist), maybe the young people who see this will be tempted to look him up.  One hat for this disappointing farce, for a night of discount DVD.
