SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Two vessels are going to be added to the Golden Gate Bridge District's fleet, and authorities are pretty pleased with their purchase.
KCBS’ Bob Melrose reports
The original plan was to buy a new ferry and the budget was $18 million. Then officials learned that Washington State was having a sale on a pair of used ferries. The price was $2 million each, but they needed a lot of work. Still the cost including the refurbishment was estimated to be about the same; so for the price of one new ferry, the district could wind up with two perfectly seaworthy ones.
District Spokeswoman Mary Currie said the staff first went to Washington to do due diligence. "They reviewed the vessels, had an in-depth evaluation of the condition of the vessels."
Currie expects both ferries to be up to snuff in about a year.
