Alameda’s Posey Tube Reopens After Water Main Break

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Crews have turned their focus to restoring water service in the area, afte working throughout the morning to drain the water and get the eastbound tunnel out of Alameda open.
ListenKCBS' Holly Quan reports

A 12 inch main broke just before 3am, and Constitution Avenue, the road that leads to the Posey Tube, became a lake, with water as deep as three feet in some places.

Crews also needed to rescue a driver, who became stranded in the standing water.

“I was driving to go pick up a friend, and my car got stuck in the water. I didn’t realize how deep the water was,” she said, telling KCBS weeks of rain have caused puddles to become common along that stretch of roadway.

Caltrans workers retrieved her Dodge Neon, which had about 4 inches of muddy water in the foot wells.

Charles Hardy, spokesman for East Bay MUD, said the road may be opened, but the work is not over.

Several nearby businesses remained without water this morning. Water service is not expected to resume until the water main is able to be repaired, possibly by this afternoon.

“We have 2,000 miles of pipe in the ground, some of it 100 years old,” Hardy said, asking for patience.

The Posey Tube reopened just before eight o'clock this morning.

The Posey Tube runs from Alameda to Oakland. The Webster Tube, which runs from Oakland to Alameda, was not affected.
