SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- It used to be that a “C” average and a decent SAT score would get you into most California State Universities with no problem, but CSU is cutting freshmen enrollment by 10 percent which means that your best chance of getting in will be at your local campus. For example, Berkley High School students have been guaranteed admission at Cal State East Bay.
“In the past, our students have applied, have accepted and attended San Francisco State and San Jose State. [Some have wanted] to get a little further away from home, or maybe [the schools] had majors that Cal State East Bay, but at this point, neither of those campuses are guaranteeing that they will accept our students who are eligible. They have to wait and see how many students from their regional area apply and then they’ll see if they have room for our students,” said Berkeley High Counselor Ilene Abrams.
KCBS’ Bob Butler reports
Abrams says many of her students are low-income and can’t afford private college, so if they are rejected by Cal State they’re only other option is community college.
“They are very full. It’s hard for students to get the classes they need, which means that they will have larger classes, or in some cases, it will take them longer to complete their lower division requirements before they can transfer to a four-year college.”
