Buying Bargain Wines
|
Listener John Deus of Pleasanton wanted to know how safe it is to buy a couple of cases of a wine that gets a really high rating.
It varies. In this case, it was a Chardonnay being sold for $2 and recently won a prestigious award. He wants to know if the wine he buys at the store is from the same batch that got the gold medal. Well, there's simply no way of telling; however, if it's a company that produces hundreds of thousands of gallons of wine every year, the odds are good that it cannot be exactly the same wine - it might be a good representation.
My advice is to buy a bottle first, take it home and try it. If it meets your satisfaction, buy more but only enough to drink within a year since these are fresh and best when they're young. And this applies to any kind of wine you may find at a bargain, such as close out wines.
