FRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ California drivers are apparently taking their time adjusting to a new statewide law that bars talking on cell phones.
California Highway Patrol officers say they've issued more than 20,000 tickets to drivers who violated the new law requiring them to use handsfree devices while driving.
The first offense is a $20 fine, but with local court costs and fees it can be closer to $100.
Meanwhile, a new law goes into effect January 1st, 2009 making it illegal to read or send text messages while driving.
