California Fire Season Opens, Early

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)  -- Lack of moisture and extreme heat are prompting state fire officials to ramp up their firefighting teams a month earlier that normal. Fire season usually starts June 15.

Firefighters are busy tackling several blazes that erupted in the past two days. Many were contained upon initial attack, but several are still burning in Southern California.

California fire officials are also working with the federal government to bring two new cargo planes to the state that can carry thousands of gallons of fire retardant.

Temperatures are supposed to drop down to normal levels in the next few days, but officials are cautioning that fire danger will remain as long dry conditions persist.
