SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - A poll released by the Mineta Transportation Institute in San Jose found that a majority of those surveyed support raising vehicle registration fees for people who drive SUVs and other big vehicles.
Not only did 63% of the respondents say they support raising the vehicle registration fees for some, they also support discounts for those who drive smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
65% favor a tax rebate system, whereby drivers would get money back for driving even more ecologically friendly cars, like hybrid vehicles.
The idea of "green taxes" has some support in Sacramento. "It's a market-based solution that gives consumers an incentive to buy clean cars rather than dirty cars," explained Ira Ruskin, D-San Jose. However, Ruskin's legislation failed on the Assembly floor last year. Two new bills would allow regional transportation agencies to impose "greenhouse gas mitigation fees."
