Caltrain Considers Fare Increase

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Caltrain may raise fares 25 cents to offset skyrocketing fuel prices. It is also looking at adding an additional quarter for each zone traveled.

That means a rider traveling from Menlo Park to San Francisco, for example, would pay $2 more roundtrip. The fare is currently $11.50.

The transit agency spent $11 million on fuel last year. This year, it’s budgeted $14.4 million, but officials say that may not be enough. Talk of a fare hike comes as Caltrain ridership has increased in recent months.

The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the fare increase Sept. 4.
