SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (KCBS) -- Good news for Marin County commuters who have been stuck in 10 mile traffic jams on southbound 101 in San Rafael the past several mornings.
Beginning Sunday, Caltrans will scrap the new lane configuration that was causing the backups.
Caltrans officials have heard drivers' cries of frustration and have figured out a way to complete a highway project without shutting down the right lane, said department spokesman Bob Haus. He says things will go back to the way they were on Sunday. So commuters will have to put up with the slowdowns for two more days.
Transportation crews are in the midst of a major overhaul of 101 through San Rafael, including the building of a new sound wall just south of Lincoln Avenue. In order to complete that wall, the right lane leading up to the construction zone was closed, pushing the morning rush hours into three lanes.
The highway project should be completed by mid-November, said Haus.
