Chemicals in Richmond's Air Surprise Researchers

RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A new scientific study compares air quality, indoors and out, in Richmond and in Bolinas, with Richmond coming out the loser.

Rachel Morello-Frosh, an environmental scientist at U.C. Berkeley tested for 155 chemicals, finding more than 100 of them present inside of homes in Richmond and 78 chemicals outdoors, which is far higher than in Bolinas, which isn't home to an oil refinery.

”We were surprised to find levels as high as they were,” said Morello-Frosh. “And to find levels as high as they were in people’s homes. And also to find that a lot of chemicals that are polluting outdoors are penetrating a lot of people’s homes here in Richmond.”

Officials with the Chevron refinery in Richmond say they're not planning a refinery expansion but a rebuilding that will reduce air pollution. Many residents reject that conclusion.
