RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Officials at Chevron Oil Refinery are lying to the city of Richmond about plans to refine dirtier, cheaper crude that could result in more pollution, according to an Oakland-based environmental group.
Chevron's final environmental impact report does not accurately detail emission increases expected with the company's Energy and Hydrogen Renewal Project, said Greg Karras, senior scientist with Communities for a Better Environment.
Switching to dirtier crude could lead to increases in mercury, sulfur and greenhouse gas emissions, Karras said during a news conference Wednesday.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District reviewed the project and did not approve it, said Karras.
Chevron officials deny the proposed project will increase pollution. If anything, it would reduce emissions, said Chevron spokesman Dean O'Hair.
