Co-worker Stands Up for Accused Computer Hijacker

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The man accused of attempting to crash the city of San Francisco's computer system has supporters who say he would never do such a thing.

Terry Childs’ stepfather wrote a letter to the judge, asking for a bail reduction, and a former co-worker has come to his defense.

Childs has been accused of four felonies, and is in jail on $5 million dollars bail in connection to an alleged attempt to hijack the City of San Francisco’s computer system so that it would crash during a routine power outage test.

There are reports that Childs set up hundreds of modems around the city. He only gave up the passwords and protocols to Mayor Gavin Newsom, when he visited Childs in jail.

However, Dana Hum, who worked at the Department of Technology with Childs, says he is not capable of such a scheme.

”Here we are spending taxpayers money, and the result is an innocent person behind bars,” said Hum.

Police say that before he was arrested, Childs wanted to rent a storage locker in Sparks Nevada, and had $10,000 on him when he was arrested.
