Coast Guard Warns of High Surf

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/BCN)  -- The U.S. Coast Guard is advising mariners to take certain precautions over the next few days due to high surf conditions along the California coast.

A high surf advisory issued by the National Weather Service was in effect Sunday and the Coast Guard cited several fatalities this weekend along the coastline in urging people to avoid going near beaches and low-lying coastal areas.

Two Milpitas cousins in their 40s were found dead inside a fishing boat that capsized off Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay on Saturday morning, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Boaters are being advised to avoid the water until seas subside and are urged to examine all safety equipment if it is necessary to go out to sea.

Mariners are also being asked to make sure they have a working marine VHF radio so that they can contact the Coast Guard on channel 16, an emergency channel, if problems arise.

Visit www.uscgboating.org for more information on boating safety and www.weather.gov for updated information on weather conditions.
