Contra Costa Supervisors Hope To Sink Peripheral Canal Plan

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposal to build a peripheral canal in the Delta to ensure the Sacramento River continues to provide water in the event of an earthquake amounts to little more than a water grab for other parts of the state, county supervisors said Tuesday.

Voters rejected a similar idea back in 1982, concerned that too much would be siphoned out of the fragile ecosystem, jeopardizing the local water supply. At their meeting yesterday, several supervisors affirmed they would vigorously oppose the governor's plan.
