SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It has been quite a few weeks since the Cosco Busan container ship rammed into the Bay Bridge.
However, oil from the subsequent spill after the November accident is still showing up.
The oil spill response is under the jurisdiction of the Unified Command. There was a brief "stand down" Friday because of the stormy weather. "We had like 87 mile per hour winds off of Angel Island and so they said that was a safety issue, so we couldn't send people out that particular day," explained Environmental Unit Leader Randy Imai. "What we are doing right now is we're re-surveying all of the segments within the both outer coast and in the Bay."
Some "re-oiling" has been reported in the East Bay. Tar balls have also been reported on several coastal beaches. Teams are on standby to respond to these oil sightings.
Although all beaches are open within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, superintendent Brian O'Neil worries that the damage from the spill has already been done. "The intertidal areas and the tide pool areas, there's still oil, coated, on those," he lamented.
Cleanup teams are taking care not to cause further harm in environmentally sensitive areas.
