Could Dogs be Used to Keep Sea Lions Off Piers?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Fishermen along San Francisco's working waterfront seem to have hit upon a solution for those pesky sea lions that delight tourists, but aren't exactly welcomed by the fishing fleet.

Commercial fishermen Jeff Claypool says the animals are a pain, eating too much of his salmon catch.

"They're cute when they're in here lying on the docks by Pier 39, but they're not too cute out in the ocean when they're stealing your livelihood," said Claypool.

The sea lions moved west, plaguing the commercial Hyde Street Pier last summer.

But by sheer chance, a fisherman's dog started barking at the sea lions one night last month, and that scared them back out to sea.

Port of San Francisco wharfinger Hedley Prince is looking into whether that can be a permanent way to keep the sea lions off the fishing pier.

"I'd like to investigate that, and it's worth studying, but it has to be done right," said Prince. "It has to be done through the proper channels, with the proper permits, and with some degree of science so that someone doesn't just go off with their dog. There should be training and protocols for it."
