County Fairs Offer Greener, Healthier Alternatives

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (KCBS) – Good news for fairgoers who don’t want to indulge in corn dogs or cotton candy – there are finally some healthy alternatives to satisfy your hunger at the fair.

The Marin County Fair appears to be leading the way, with plenty of low-fat, heart-healthy cuisine options. Of course, you can still find pizza and funnel cakes at the Marin County Fair, but all of the food vendors have to offer healthful menu options, too.

Teri Rockas with the Play Fair Partnership explained to KCBS that the fair is already smoke-free and eco-conscious, and now it has a midway that won’t add to fairgoers’ midsections.

For example, there isn’t anything deep-fried on the menu at Marisco’s Mexican seafood, though the stand is offering what KCBS’ Doug Sovern described as a delicious shrimp ceviche.

Lola Ramirez pointed to her long line of customers, right next to a nearly deserted funnel cake stand.

Although adults appear to be gravitating toward the healthier fare, it can be something of a tough sell for the younger crowd.

Nonetheless, a band sang the virtues of going green and eating right while Rochelle Boucher set up a bicycle-powered fruit smoothie machine.

Even the corn dog and cotton candy vendors were trying to lure customers with more slimming options on their menus.

Sovern reported that, if you exposed enough kids to the message of eating right – and repeatedly exposed them to that message – they seemed to be catching on.
