OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums plans to ask voters this November to raise property taxes to pay for more police officers on the streets.
The mayor made the proposal Monday as 94 new recruits began training at the Oakland Police Academy. Once they graduate, those cadets will bring the police force to 803 sworn officers by year’s end.
But Dellums would like to see an additional 150 officers over the next three years. He said raising taxes is the only way to pay for more police in these tough economic times.
