Dellums to Receive Honor for Anti-Apartheid Efforts

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums is being awarded a prestigious South African government honor for leading the struggle in Congress for the economic sanctions that helped end South African apartheid.

In a ceremony ext week in Pretoria, Dellums will receive the Order of the Grand Companions of O.R. Tambo. It is named for Oliver Reginald Tambo, the one-time law partner of Nelson Mandela and president of the African National Congress from 1967 to 1978.

The awards are conferred on non-South Africans for friendship shown to South Africa.
