MARTINEZ, Calif. (KCBS) -- The California Community College District is bracing for an onslaught of applications, after the state university system announced deep budget cuts.
Both the University of California campuses and the State Universities schools say they may be forced to reject a combined total of 10,000 new students because of state budget cuts. That means many more students may be applying to junior colleges, said Community College District Chancellor Dianne Woodruff.
The newly unemployed are also applying to junior colleges, where classes teach valuable job skills. Community college enrollment is up 10.2 percent over last year, said Woodruff.
The problem is that community colleges may also be forced to turn away students because of anticipated budget cuts.
