Episcopal Church Urges No on Proposition 8

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The Episcopal Church in California Wednesday urged a no vote on state Proposition 8 which would overturn a state Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage.

The Reverand Marc Handley says it's a matter of civil and human rights. "We are of one mind as a church about civil society's need to protect the rights of every (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered) people," he said.

Handley admits the church does not perform marriage ceremonies for same sex couples, but does offer "blessings" of same sex couples.

Meanwhile, Catholic Bishops in California support Prop 8 saying marriage between a man and a woman is a human institution. They say it pre-exists both church and government.

The latest polls show most voters oppose Proposition 8.
