FEMA To Begin Assessing Fire Damage

picture of a firefighter holding fire hoseSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to send crews into California fire zones now that firefighters have managed to contain 98 percent of the lightning-sparked fires burning in the state for nearly a month.

The situation has improved so much that most mandatory evacuations have been lifted in Northern California. Residents are now being allowed to return to their homes or what may be left of their homes.

Fire crews have extinguished all but 38 of the more than 2,000 blazes that broke out after a lightning storm on June 20th.

The fire near Big Sur is now 65 percent contained and most residents have been allowed to return home.

The fire in Butte County, which led to the evacuation of 10,000 people and one death, is 85 percent contained.

Farther north, in Trinity and Shasta counties, mandatory evacuations are still in effect for areas of the rural community of Junction City, and the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The fire there is 65 percent contained.
