Fire Without the Smoke: A Marin Stove Solution

GREENBRAE, Calif. (KCBS)  -- This weekend marks the beginning of a new program by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District that calls for fines for people who burn wood in their fireplaces on Spare the Air days. The district imposed the new rules because burning wood puts large particulate matter into the air, making it harder for people with respiratory problems to breath.

But a new product promises the fire, without the smoke. It's called the EcoSmart Fire Kit.

"It burns a de-natured alcohol, which is 100 percent clean burning fuel that doesn't need a flu or a chimney," said Eric Olsen with Marin Outdoor Living in Greenbrae.

There are 20 different range models to choose from, each capable of putting out 1,300 BTU's, which is equivalent to a small fireplace.

"It's not meant to be your sole source of heat, but it definitely take the chill of the of the air, and produce the same amount of heat as a fire place without the pollution," said Olsen.

The best part is that they are U-L certified, and can be placed in almost any room. Olsen says the denatured alcohol fuel can be purchased at almost any hardware store.
