Fire on Angel Island Blankets SF in Smoke

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- People all around the San Francisco Bay have been watching a brushfire that started on top of Angel Island in Marin County Sunday. That blaze has grown to more than one-hundred acres.

As many as 40 campers were on the island at the time the blaze broke out near a camping area. Marin County Fire Batallion Chief Mike Gianni says he believes all have been evacuated.

Giannini says said four engines and nearly one-hundred firefighters are on the island fighting the stubborn flames.

The fire is being fueled by the dry weather and shifty winds.

There is no containment as of yet.

The fire is especially difficult to fight because all the fire fighting equipment and personnel have to be ferried across the Bay to the island.

Thick smoke from the blaze is drifting into San Francisco and down the peninsula.

While no structures have burned, Giannini says the firefighters are concerned about East Garrison, which is an area of the island with several historic structures.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Picture courtesy CBS5. (MGO)
