OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- The Bay Area's first high occupancy toll lane will open for business on Highway 680 next year, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
So-called HOT lanes would be designated for non-carpool drivers who pay a toll to use a high occupancy vehicle or HOV/carpool lane, said Steve Heminger, executive director of the MTC.
HOT lanes would ease congestion, generate a new source of revenue which can pay for transportation improvements, and improve the efficiency of carpool lanes, said Heminger. They would work by allowing solo drivers to enter and exit HOV lanes at designated points and be charged electronically using the FasTrak system.
KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports
The region's first HOT lane will stretch 14 miles on southbound 680 between Alameda and Santa Clara counties. Interstate 580 in the Tri-Valley area of Alameda County will get a HOT lane too. The plan is to create an 800-mile network in the Bay Area, becoming the first such network in the nation.
