Five Injured in San Francisco Explosion

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Five people were sent to the hospital in San Francisco Monday night after an explosion and small fire at a house in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Lieutenant Ken Smith says the powerful explosion occurred just before eight o'clock Monday night in the one-hundred block of Congo Street near San Francisco City College.

"Firefighters responded to what was a small fire but the front of the two story structure had been blown out," said Lt. Smith.

They extinguished a small fire that was burning.

Four people inside the home were transported to the hospital. Smith says at least two of them have suffered second degree burns. One man was treated facial injuries and neck pain. And an elderly woman in the house was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The blast was so powerful, it blew out the windows in the house next door. A two-year-old next door was treated at the scene after getting glass in his face.
