Fleet of Plug-In Cars Headed For Silicon Valley

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Part economic and part symbolic, business leaders in Silicon Valley want to prove that there is a market for energy-saving cars, while saving gas consumption and air pollution.
Silicon Valley business executives will soon be buzzing around Santa Clara County in 100 plug-in hybrid vehicles, which is double the number driven nationwide.
“I get 150 miles per gallon,” said Carl Guardino of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. “We want to show that by mass producing, you can drive the price down and find more efficient ways to build the product. In this case, the battery pack that is required.”
The cars will be Toyota Prius models with $8,000 add-on battery conversion kits.
Guardino said the Silicon Valley is ready to step up and lead the fight against global warming and pushing for alternative fuels.
