GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST

  (PG-13)

At a time when many of us would love a good romantic comedy to get our minds off the real world..along comes this one.  Matthew McConaughey is front and center of this tale.  He plays a slick and apparently very sexy celebrity photographer, able to seduce a different woman every night and follow through with a one-night stand.  When he's invited back to the family mansion and estate for his brother's wedding, he runs into the one ex-girlfriend (Jennifer Garner) that maybe meant something to this superficial guy..  Since the movie tries a bit to be similiar to Dickens, we get a ghost of a playboy uncle (Michael Douglas.)   While there are tepid good moments with Douglas, the comedy falls flat due to a leading man who cannot act.  I kept asking myself "what has happened to McConaughey?  His is soul-dead..and it's not just because his character is written that way.  There is no connection or caring or investing in this one note, silly movie.  It must have been fun to make, since the surroundings are those of billionaires and mainstream's favorite "hot chicks" are everywhere.  But when even an interesting actress like Garner looks terrible and sleep walks through an underwritten role, it's time to wait until DVD.  One hat for Douglas..who, like the audience, deserves better.
