Global Warming Campaign Calls for Lights Out in SF

San Francisco at nightSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- As part of the effort to raise awareness about global warming and the importance of saving energy, the lights are going out in San Francisco for an hour Saturday night.

Several city landmarks will be dark from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and organizers of the event "Lights Out" hope at least 15 percent of San Francisco residents will participate.

"We're asking people to turn out their lights for one hour and install one compact fluorescent light bulb, and we believe that if you do that, you can actually save quite a large amount of energy here in San Francisco," explained Lights Out Creator, Nick Tyler.

"It's symbolic. It's important to give people something that they can do that connects them with other people in the community around them. The solution here isn't one person at a time, it's all of us together," he said.

At least half a dozen restaurants are planning on participating, including the Medjool Restaurant. "It just amazes me how much the world uses energy, so if we can do just a small token for one hour or two hours or three hours per night or per day... Whatever we can do to give back to earth, we should," said owner, Gus Murad.

The Bay Bridge, Coit Tower, City Hall, the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Transamerica Building will all go dark for the event.
