SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Carpoolers may start paying a toll this summer to cross the Golden Gate Bridge.
KCBS reports a proposal is on the table to help raise revenue for the cash-strapped bridge district.
KCBS’ George Harris reports
Nearly 17 hundred carpoolers cross the iconic span daily, vehicles with three or more people, motorcycles, and buses. This Thursday the Golden Gate Bridge District Finance Committee will consider a proposal to impose a first time toll.
“Increasing the carpool toll rate on the Golden Gate Bridge from zero to fifty percent of the cash toll would currently be a three dollar car pool toll,” said district spokeswoman Mary Currie.
“The Bay Area bridges have just gone through this process and to us it seemed like we could lessen the public confusion,” added Currie.
Public hearings will be held, but if final approval is given, carpoolers will begin paying a three dollar toll beginning July 1st generating $1.3 million the first year which would help the bridge district close a deep budget deficit.
