Supporters of gay marriage are praising the governor for endorsing the ruling, but the governor's stance on the issue has confused many people.

Schwarzenegger told a group of Republicans last month he would campaign against a ballot measure that would ban same sex marriage in the state. He has twice vetoed legislation that would have legalized gay weddings.
