SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Following the trend these days of everything going "green", a group of environmentally sustainable homes around the Bay Area were put on display Sunday. Bay Area-based non-profit group Build it Green promotes eco-friendly building, and sponsored the tour.
“ We want your average homeowner to go in and see, touch and feel what a green home is all about. Most homes you cannot tell by looking at the outside, or even inside, the home that they’re green” said Brian Gitt, Build It Green Executive Director.
The homes on display in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties adhere to the five basic 'green building' principles from water and energy conservation to home placement.
The construction may cost more upfront, but more than pays for itself in the long run with energy and water savings. And Gitt maintained that even while the housing market continues it's big slide the economics of green building make sense.
