SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS/AP)  -- Hewlett-Packard is spending $13.9 billion to buy information technology services provider Electronic Data Systems, its largest merger since Compaq in 2002.

The deal would expand the reach into the corporate consulting of a company whose primary revenue still comes from hardware manufacturing market, giving HP more resources to compete against IBM.
