HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) - Hayward officials are joining a group of Bay Area cities in moving to cut down on secondhand smoke.
The Hayward City Council voted Tuesday to give initial approval to new restrictions on smoking in outdoor areas, as well as many indoor locations.
Under the new rules, smoking will be prohibited within 20 feet of building doors, windows or entryways.
Smoking will also be prohibited in bus shelters and other transit waiting areas in Hayward.
The new rules are scheduled to come up for adoption June 3.
When the restrictions become law, Hayward will be joining a group of other cities including Oakland, Belmont, Berkeley and San Jose that have similar smoking prohibitions. |
