SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Four winery in Healdsburg is thinking outside of the bottle these days and is packaging their wines in sleek, eco-friendly tubes designed to cut back on waste.
Larry Legion, a partner of Four, says the unique packing reduces landfill waste by 85 percent and keeps the wine fresh for an extended period of time after opening.
“When you open the bottle it starts to degrade immediately, and most wines within 24 hours, 72 at the most, have degraded to the point where you can’t drink them. But with a wine tube, you can open that and six weeks later you can be drawing off it and it’s still as good as when you first opened it,” said Legion.
Legion says the lighter weight, three liter tubular packaging saves on shipping compared to bottles and it’s 100 percent recyclable.
KCBS’ Larry Charoni reports.
“We’re not going to try and compete with a bottle in terms of aesthetics, that’s two totally different aesthetics, but the biggest thing there is we’re the first ones to put luxury wines into this kind of a package.”
In addition to being eco-friendly, the company boasts that by sending their products in this light weight material allows them to offer their wine at a very competitive price.
Winemaker Barry Gnekow sourced and blended the first release of FOUR from exceptional premium California Cabernet Sauvignon from Monterey, Paso Robles and Lodi appellations.
