Honeydripper
|
(PG-13)
Lone Star, 8 Men Out, Passionfish...Director/Writer John Sayles makes movies that often gives us characters to connect with, in situations that are anything but silly or contrived. This time it's 1950, the place is a small town in Alabama. It's called Harmony, fitting for this tale of a nightclub owner (Danny Glover) fighting to keep the music alive. As owner of the Honeydripper Lounge, he needs to bring in new acts to attract a youthful audience. The drama takes place during his big weekend, when a guitar playing drifter may just change his luck and breathe life into the club. The acting is first-rate, especially Glover, who is believable in every frame of this slow-paced but spirited and touching film. YaYa DeCosta lights up every scene she is in as Glover's delicate young daughter.
