Independence Day Revelers Seek Affordable Transit Options

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) – With the price of gas sky-high these days, public transit agencies across the Bay Area could see big crowds and perhaps even some record numbers of passengers.

BART, in particular, is expecting business to be brisk on Friday.

Just last week, Gay Pride events in San Francisco meant packed BART trains. “We had over two million riders,” explained BART spokeswoman Luna Salaver.

Friday, BART is operating on a Sunday schedule. “However,” said Salaver, “for most of the day we will be running longer trains to accommodate crowds going to the Giants game.” There will be fireworks in San Francisco, too.

Plenty of people are expected to pack the city’s Aquatic Park for the festivities. “We’ve got sixty shuttles scheduled to run from Caltrain, from the Ferry Building, and from Van Ness, up toward the northern part of the city, where people will be going to see the fireworks,” said MUNI spokesman Judson True. The MUNI shuttles will be running from 2:00 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Friday.
