Based on a hero of the Marvel Comic Books, Iron Man could have been just another superhero comic book movie. It is saved by the casting of Robert Downey, Jr. We meet a world famous zillionaire weapon inventor and manufacturer (Downey), who's kidnapped in a war zone. He is forced to build his captors something dangerous, and instead becomes a dangerous weapon himself. His suit of iron is golly gee exciting, and the movie soon turns into popcorn fun. Good supporting cast of Gwyneth Paltrow actually showing vitality after sleepwalking through too many previous roles; Jeff Bridges is suitably menacing. The film is underwritten, too often depending on sheer action; there's lack of exposition and backstory. Still with a terrific and unique character like Robert Downey Jr. taking us to his new high..it's a good time at the movies.
