John McCain

John S. McCain the 3rd is the senior U.S. Senator from Arizona.  He was born 8/29/36 in the Panama Canal Zone, where his father was serving as an Admiral in the U.S. Navy.  Both his father and grandfather were highly decorated admirals, and his father was Commander in Chief, Pacific Command, in charge of all U.S. naval forces in Vietnam.  McCain is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.  After graduating in 1958, he became a naval aviator, serving as an attack pilot in Vietnam until he was shot down and captured in 1967.  McCain was a prisoner of war for five and a half years, finally freed in 1973.  He retired from the Navy in 1981, and moved to Phoenix.  In 1982, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.  In 1986, after the retirement of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, Congressman McCain was elected to succeed him.  He's been re-elected to the Senate three times since.  McCain ran for the Republican nomination for president in 2000, losing to Texas Governor George W. Bush.  McCain is married to Cindy McCain, his second wife; he and his first wife divorced.  He has four biological children and three adopted children.  McCain is an Episcopalian.
