Kim discovered her love of radio at age 4 when she realized that the Beatles were living inside of it! In fact, so were many of her other favorites like the Kinks, Paul Revere and the Raiders, CCR, and the Who. "And yes, I was one of those who slept with my RCA transistor listening to the Boss Sounds of KFRC and KYA, but I also loved the legendary KSFO, my parents station. Love of music defined me for many years." Kim made the transition from obsessive listener to wanna-be-performer when she received her first guitar at age 10. "I was part of our high school's folk scene." By the time she was out of school she was writing her own music and playing in some local rock bands.
Kim focused her early years on the travel industry. She worked for AAA and the Hilton Hotels and eventually became a travel agent. "I mistakenly thought I'd be able to travel the world, instead I was stuck at a desk all day." She quit and rented an apartment in London for a few months and when she returned she decided to give radio a shot.
Kim says she talked her way into an entry level job at KSFO/KYA. She learned the ropes and was given a great opportunity to work with many of the legends she grew up listening to like Gene Nelson, Carter B. Smith, Russ "the Moose" Syracuse and most significantly, Jazzbeaux Collins, whose freeform show she had the delightful pleasure of producing.
"One thing led to another and one day I found myself on the air, make that IN THE AIR, flying in a plane reporting traffic for Frank and Mike on KNBR. I'm not sure how it all happened but I knew I somehow found an industry I loved."
There's been many twists and turns in Kim's career including a recent three year stint in Portland hosting her own show. She feels she's finally found her home at KCBS. "It's a true pleasure to work with such pro's like Stan and Susan in the morning."
Kim remains drawn to music and still likes to play guitar with her husband and friends. She's also an obsessive hiker and cyclist and spend lots of time with her best friend Petey, a sparky little Dalmatian who's always up for an adventure.
Kim is also an amateur photographer and collects vintage cameras. She has had some of her black and white, hand-tinted photos displayed through the years at cafes in San Francisco.
